Mark Giglio (Part 1)

These wallpapers are screen printed by hand on recyclable paper using water-based inks. I love the playfulness here, the boldness of color. This would be a great "accent" in a child's room or in your office.
Mark's work is very inspiring, so there will be more tomorrow.

Timorous Beasties

Timorous Beasties was founded in Glasgow in 1990 by Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons, who met while studying textile design at Glasgow School of Art. Their jarring and unconventional subjects marry together contemporary themes like machine guns, crack addicts, and urban rot with the recognizable and sentimental scenes of old-world design found in 1800's Toile de Jouy wallpaper. So what was an upper class style (toile) becomes a record of urban ills. These newest designs were displayed at this year's ICFF.

Claire Coles

Claire Coles offers a new approach to wallpaper design. Stitching vintage wallpapers together of various textures and patterns, Claire creates one-of-a-kind intricate wallpapers, illustrations and accessories. These look amazing in person and would give your wall some unique and artful interest. This was one of the highlights for me at ICFF. Great idea.

Tracy Kendall Wallpaper

Looking through CS Interiors this month, I saw Tracy Kendall's wallpapers, some of which I've seen before, but I like these new book and magazine stacks. I don't know why, I have plenty of books as it is, but I love these virtual stacks. Kendall is British and showed at this year's Design 100% show, but has been gathering attention for a decade. "I’m not trying to mass-produce anything – I want [my work] to convey a strong idea but not to dominate the room so much that that there is not room for anything else. The wallpaper designs I produce are all starting points ..." The wallpapers are all hand-produced.

Andreas Samuelsson

I just learned that one of my favorite graphic artists and designers Andreas Samuelsson has designed a line of wallpaper for Studio Nommo in Istanbul. Samuelsson has an on-line shop where you can see more of his work.

mod green pod wallpapers and fabrics

Sisters-in-law Nancy and Lisa Mims revamped the wallpaper industry abandoning the standard toxic vinyl (PVC) coatings on most commercial papers. Instead, they returned to a rich tradition of artisan quality hand silk-screened wallpapers without employing vinyl. Lizzie Allen

Graham & Brown is the UK's leading wallcovering company and for the last few years they've sponsored a "Young British Talent" line of designs by well, young British designers. Now available at Target online, you can find these afforable papers and give your rooms a little lift. Look at how you can customize the Frames paper. DEBORAH BOWNESS Hand-Printed Wallpaper

Deborah Bowness, where have I been? Deborah was the winner of the ICFF Editors Award this year for Best Wallcoverings, but I just stumbled across her name and happened to visit her site. I think her unconventional approach to wallpaper is exciting and unexpected. She uses photography heavily. To me, these are like little Warhols. Her papers are hand-printed, which usually means they are silkscreened. I’d love to see her process in person. Visit her website.

ERICA WAKERLY Wallpaper Design

I've been going through my notes from this years ICFF show in New York and I was so impressed with Erica Wakerly. Like Nama Rococo, she takes an unusual approach to fabric and wallpaper design. I think these are fantastic. Visit Erica's website.

Her designs are aesthetically innovative, exploring unconventional motifs and ideas of contrast through a combination of the hand drawn and graphic line. Her background in illustration and graphic design has provided her with a unique outlook on print design.

NAMA ROCOCO

I met founder Karen Combs in New York last May and can't stop thinking about her line of wallpaper. All prints are handscreened and hand painted, all the inks are hand mixed and applied. I love her approach-- wallpaper isn't just pattern, it's rhythm, art, and movement. Her work came out of a desire to see her art spread across a large expanse of paper-- like the Japanese scrolls she'd seen at the Met. She has created a truly original line of beautiful papers. If you're short on wall space, you can buy a single sheet and frame it!
