Leslie Hewitt received her MFA from Yale University in 2004 and her BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 2000. Her work is included in the current Whitney Bienniel. I like her exploration of race in America via large format photography -- themes she shares with Kara Walker. From the NY Times review: "A still life photograph called ''Make It Plain'' (top) documents an empty easel -- support for a missing picture -- resting on two dog-eared paperbacks about black protest. (The work's title is a phrase favored by Malcolm X.) A heavy frame replicates the wood of the easel; leaning against the wall, the piece is as sculptural as it is pictorial." Although her work does not always follow the dictate "make it plain," I find it compelling and interesting even if I don't fully understand it.
